Intrawest is the world’s leading developer and operator of village-centered resort real estate destinations. ![]() Joe Houssian founded Intrawest in 1976 as a residential and urban real estate company. In the mid-1980s Joe met Hugh Smythe, head of Blackcomb Mountain, and together they foresaw incredible opportunities in the resort and leisure business. This vision resulted in Intrawest's 1986 acquisition of Blackcomb Mountain. Creating a unique marriage of resort operations savvy and real estate expertise.
In 1994 Intrawest divested its urban real estate arm to focus on becoming the global leader in the design, development and operation of four-season resorts. Each resort demonstrates a respect for the surrounding natural environment and highlights the uniqueness of the local cultural and geographic setting.
With locations in Canada, the United States and Europe, Intrawest has a growing global presence in many of the best resort locations around the world.
Intrawest’s mission is to create memories for its guests and staff as the best mountain, beach and resort experience…again and again. Places with a level of service and a standard of hospitality best measured by the frequency of visiting smiles.
In 2006, Intrawest was acquired by Fortress Investment Group LLP. In the same year, Joe Houssian, founder of the company, announced his retirement from his position as Chief Executive Officer.
